Hi, I’m Mari

I’ve been sewing for over 30 years, starting on my grandmother’s Singer at her kitchen table. Along the way I spent 15 years teaching home sewing classes at a community college, and these days I repair and restore sewing machines out of my home workshop as a side business. Between the classroom and the repair bench, I’ve heard just about every version of “why won’t this thing sew?” there is.

I started this site because I remember exactly how confusing tension dials, bobbin cases, and needle numbers felt the first time around — and how expensive it can seem to get a machine looked at when the fix is often something you can do yourself in five minutes once someone shows you how.

What This Site Is About

Best Sewing Machine for Beginners exists to answer the questions beginners actually ask — not the ones marketing copy assumes you’re asking. That means honest buying advice when you’re choosing your first machine, and clear, step-by-step troubleshooting when something goes wrong with the one you already own.

Most of what you’ll find here comes directly from my repair bench: real machines, real faults, real fixes that worked. Where a guide applies to a specific brand or model, I say so. Where it doesn’t, I keep it general so it’s useful whatever machine you’re sitting in front of.
